Bone diseases such as osteoporosis may not get as much attention as heart disease, cancer, and other major diseases, but they are common, and in all seriousness, they take a large toll on the population’s overall health status and quality of life. Many individuals who suffer fractures as a result of osteoporosis suffer significant pain, height loss, and may lose the ability to dress themselves, stand up, and walk. Those with osteoporosis are also at risk of complications such as pressure sores, pneumonia, and urinary tract infections.

For the past 6 months I have been working on a 107 Recipe Low Glycemic Index eCookbook - Everyday Cooking for Health and today I'm giving you a sneak peak! The eCookbook is to help people reach sustainable healthy eating based on low glycemic index foods with down-to-earth, easy-to-follow, quick-to-prepare recipes.

I've picked 5 recipes to highlight in this blog post, although it was hard to choose which ones! 
 

The power-packed collection of healthful recipes will help you eat to feel great. You'll be able to maintain a healthy weight, lose weight, reduce the risk of and better manage diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, and so much more. Best of all, you will still enjoy your food!

All recipes include nutritional info for: calories, carbohydrates, net carbohydrates, protein, fats, saturated fats, net carbs, sodium, sugar and fibre!

But first you may be thinking... "What the heck is the glycemic index, and why is it important to my health?"

You may have heard that low carbo...



This is a hearty and delicious chili that even meat-eaters love! 

Including more vegetarian meals into your diet provides good quality protein, higher fibre content, and lower in calories and saturated fat than chili made with ground beef. 

Textured or texturized vegetable protein (TVP), also known as textured soy protein (TSP), soy meat, or soya chunks is a defatted soy flour product, a by-product of extracting soybean oil. It is quick to cook, with a protein content far greater than that which comes from meat. It also has a very similar texture to ground meat.  

Serves: 8

Ingredients:

- 1 2/3 cup Vegetable broth, no salt added

- 1 1/3 cup Textured vegetable protein (TVP) (e.g. Bob's Red Mill TVP) 

- 1 tbsp Oil of choice

- 3 cups Vegetables (e.g. Peppers, onion, zucchini, celery, etc.)

- 1 cup Corn, canned, salt-free

- 2 tsp Crushed garlic

- 3 tbsp Chili powder

- 1 ½ tsp Cumin

- 1 can Diced tomatoes, no salt added (796 mL)

- 1 can Tomato sauce, no salt added (398 mL)
